7 Horribly Toxic Things In The Ocean That Are Scarier Than Sharks

4. Puffer Fish

Puffer fish look pretty cute. In fact, the most poisonous ones don€™t even have those dangerous looking spines like the ones you€™re probably used to seeing. But they are still pretty damn deadly, at least if you decide to have a go at eating one. €œWhy would you eat them?€ You might ask. Well, a lot of the time you probably won€™t even know that you€™re eating one. As they€™re found pretty commonly throughout the tropics, outbreaks of accidental pufferfish ingestion happen every couple of years when fishermen accidently catch large amounts of them and either decide to sell them anyways or just plain don€™t know what they are. Outbreaks are more common in some places with less regulation like Bangladesh (where they happen surprisingly frequently), but have been reported all over the world. They do actually eat these guys completely intentionally in Japan for some reason. In fact the most poisonous organ, the liver, is considered the tastiest part of it - but selling it was banned in 1984. Other parts of the fish are still eaten, and result in an average of 44 poisonings and 6 fatalities per year. Good family friendly fun. Symptoms include numbness, feelings of illness, paralysis and death. You guessed it, there€™s no antidote.
