7 Ways SpaceX Will Get Us To Mars By 2018

6. Making Interiors Both Safe And Stylish

As well as looking swish, the upgraded interiors of their Dragon craft is symptomatic of their new approach to space travel.

A lot of people are pretty disappointed to see that the interiors of a lot of NASA's craft and the ISS have a distinctly vintage vibe about them. Most spacecraft are still using the buttons and dials of the 60s and 70s - albeit slightly upgraded - because it's tried and tested. If you're spending that much money sending something into orbit, you want to be damn sure that it works.

Another key feature of the Dragon is that it has an abort function, meaning that, even if the rockets do go up in flames (happens to the best of us), the craft, the people in it, and it's lovely shiny interior are all flung clear of it ready to fight another day.

By bringing costs and risks down, SpaceX are allowing themselves more room to innovate and experiment. This not only gives us a new generation of spacecraft, but also finally gives us the sci-fi aesthetic of our dreams.
