Dry ice vapour is that stuff that Heston Blumenthal is always putting in his demented recipes or cascading off the stage at rock gigs, but you can make it easily at home using just a fire extinguisher and a pillowcase.

Not only can you use it to throw the coolest house parties in the world, but you can also learn all about sublimation. Sublimation is a process when a substance transitions straight from a solid to a gas, without passing through the liquid stage.

Once you have your dry ice, you could just use it to play with the awesome flowing fog effect, but you could also use it to make a sort of liquid nitrogen alternative or you can even use it to make ice cream.

The vapour that flows from dry ice is made up of CO2 and, whilst it isn't usually harmful in normal amounts, make sure you perform your experiments in a well-ventilated area and try not to breath in lungfuls of the stuff.
