9 Batsh*t Crazy Theories That Might Actually Be True

5. Slow Time: Time Is Slowing Down

One of the most head-scratching phenomena in modern astronomy is that the more distant a cosmic object is, the faster it appears to be moving away from us.

This flies in the face of what we know about matter and gravity, as the gravitational forces of the universe should, by all rights, be slowing the expansion down.

This is where we get our theories for Dark Energy from, as it would help explain the acceleration, but there's nothing to say that this is the only explanation.

A group of scientists in Spain offer a different solution to the conundrum - it is not the stars that are speeding up, but time that is slowing down. The reason the more distant objects appear to be accelerating away from us is that we are looking at them back in time, when time passed at a faster rate.

The theory solves the same problems as Dark Energy, but without the need for the mysterious force (although it would require us to figure out just why time is slowing down in the first place).
