9 Mind-Blowing Facts You Probably Didn’t Know About Yourself

3. You Can Glow

Not only are you covered in majestic zebra-stripes; you're also bioluminescent. Similar to fireflies and glowworms, humans have a faint glow that is 1000 times weaker than our eyes perceive... but it's there. Japanese scientists released amazing images of "glittering" human bodies from a study in 2009 which finally proved the fact. Bioluminescence is a form of chemiluminescence, where light energy is released in a chemical reaction. Most living organisms use it for survival: bobtails squids expel their luminescent material to distract potential predators, and other crustaceans use it to attract mates with their enticingly sexy glow. In humans, "excited" molecules react with chemicals called fluorophores to emit photons, giving off a glowing aura from our bodies, but there's no evolutionary purpose to it. Just magic, we guess.
