John Edwards had all the makings of an American political star. A good-looking, southern Democrat with electable, middle-of-the-road charm and an impressive wife, he was a popular senator until 2004 when he became his party's candidate for Vice President. Though the Democrats lost that election, the Edwards camp had every reason to believe he'd have another run for the White House in his future. And then...well, then things took kind of a turn. Reports emerged in 2007 that Edwards had been carrying on a relationship with one of his staffers, Rielle Hunter, who was, at the time, pregnant. Edwards denied the affair and appeared outraged by the allegations, particularly as his wife was battling breast cancer at the time. The affair- but not paternity of the baby- was eventually admitted to in 2008, with Edwards making a statement at the same time as the opening ceremony for the Olympic Games (nice distraction tactic, buddy). And this is when things started to get messy. A member of Edwards' campaign team, Andrew Young, claimed he was the father of the child and money started to flow from the campaign to both Young and Hunter, leading the public to collectively shake their heads and asked "how stupid does this guy think we are?". Edwards finally admitted to fathering the child in 2010 but by that point his career and marriage had completely dissolved and his presidential aspirations were a thing of the past.
