Modifying someone's genes in the world of sci-fi probably involves an array of test tubes and gamma rays, operated by serious scientists in lab coats. Scientists in the real world, however, seem to have gone one better by developing a method of gene modification in the form of a lotion.

In the future, you may be able to treat a range of genetic disorders, from psoriasis to some cancers, by simply rubbing a bit of moisturiser into your skin.

The technology works by suspending certain nucleic acids (the "NA" in DNA and RNA) in nanostructures small enough to slip between the skin cells. Once they get through the epidermis, these little guys can get into your cells and selectively switch off the faulty, disease causing genes.
