9 Ways To Destroy The Universe

6. The End Of Time

Strap in, this one's tricksy. We begin with three assumptions (well-supported assumptions, but assumptions nonetheless): The multiverse is infinitely inflating, spacetime is infinite, and probability is based on the relative frequency of an event. If these three things are true, then it means that time is quite literally running out. Basically, the problem with infinite space, time and inflation is that it means that anything with a probability of more than zero would not only happen, but happen an infinite number of times. This messes up pretty much all of our calculations for reality itself as literally everything is equally likely to happen all the time. In order for our sums (and reality) to make sense again, we have to put in limiting factors called geometric cutoffs that do away with that irksome value of "infinity". Unfortunately, this means that time is finite. Which means that time will end at some point, do you see where I'm going with this? The very best thing about this is that we can only really predict when it would happen using probability, with a 50% chance of it happening in the next 3.7 billion years. To put that in a little bit of perspective, that's 1.3 billion years before our sun is expected to die. Better start reading that book you've always been meaning to tackle, time might be running out faster than we thought.
