Air Playit App Review

We take a look at Digiarty's new free media streaming app that allows users to access their media files on the go from a mobile device, no matter what the file format.

Air Playit is Digiarty Software's latest app, designed to take on the video and audio file streaming market and allow users to access their files remotely, no matter what the file format with an impressively simple functionality and a clever eye for simplification. The app is structured in such a way to allow users to navigate through and access their own folders simply (with an easy to apply permission system) on the fly. Your organisational structure will survive through to the app, meaning searching for files is as simple as it could ever be. Chosen files are available to play whenever the app has access to a network connection, as long as the server is running on your primary system (usually the home PC or Mac), though it is also possible to convert files while attached to a network to allow the user to play the files while offline later within the app. That means - for example - that anyone on holiday can download files locally to their iPad while within WiFi access to watch back at the hotel, or by the pool where there isn't network access without having to access the files through iTunes. Probably the strongest string to Air Playit's bow is its format versatility: there are few opportunities like this to play such a broad range of file types without problem, and it is actually something of a challenge to come up with a file type that isn't compatible (the app is actually capable of streaming and playing 320 different video & audio formats). Key to the app's appeal is that it will actually allow Apple system users to view usually forbidden file formats (which would usually require tedious conversion) directly in their devices without having to covert through a third party converter or iTunes. In short it addresses a need that iTunes users will have expressed every time a forbidden/unrecognised file format caused them some frustration. All-in-all it's a great app, with very few noticeable shortcomings. The majority of issues that arose, like unintentional pausing and crashing after extended use are merely mild frustrations, and restarting the app fixes them without lasting problems: the only slightly enduring limitation crops up when your device goes to sleep, as the app cannot recognise the point at which the stream was interrupted, and goes back to the start. This isn't exactly fatal, but in a context of DVD and Blu-ray players that can effortlessly track stop points and restart in the desired place, it's something of a curiosity that something as advanced as Air Playit does not have the capacity. Yes, turning off your sleep function sorts it out, but intuitive functionality wouldn't require that slightly irksome activity - and discovering as much through trial is not the best way to endear your consumer. But if that is the only flaw with Air Playit, you have to consider the app to be a resounding success: able to cope with an embarrasingly rich inventory of file types, and with an attentive eye for ergonomics, this is arguably the finest streaming app yet to hit the market. And it's free, for God's sake, so you can't really pick at it too much. But even then, it's a very impressive bit of software. Get it here now.
