America's 10 Scariest Abandoned Asylums & Hospitals

5. Rolling Hills Asylum - Bethany New York

This massive complex, 53,000 square acres, opened in 1827 as something along the lines of a workhouse, accommodating the poor, disabled, mentally ill, orphans and even killers. Able bodied inmates, as those who resided within were called, worked the land, and also operated a wood-shop where coffins were built for the asylum's use and local mortuaries. The poor of the county were buried in the asylum grounds, but records fail to indicate exactly where this was situated, as it disappeared under grass and land redevelopment.

In the 1950's, the asylum functioned as The Old County Care Home and Infirmary. The buildings were turned into retail units during the 1990s, when shop proprietors reported strange experiences, including doors closing by themselves, apparitions, disembodied voices and screams. The site now runs ghost tours and other paranormal events, as well as being a regular staple of paranormal TV programming.
