When it came to actually leaving the cells, West was unable to fit through his tunnel due to an unanticipated steel bar blocking his way. The men had all agreed that if the plan was to work they had no time to wait for anyone as every second was vital if their escape was to be a success. This meant that West was left behind.

Due to the large hole in the back of his cell, West was questioned extensively about the breakout and most of what we know about the escape plan came directly from him. West claimed to be the mastermind behind the plan and gave the authorities bountiful information about the escape but no information that would lead to the others being recaptured.
