Major flooding in Newcastle City Centre has caused huge devastation after a month's rainfall fell in just an hour on Thursday evening. Most roads within the city and surrounding areas are unpassable, while services on the Metro and main train line are severely affected by the torrential rain that has left many areas of the city flooded. The motorway running through the centre of Newcastle has also been flooded, as has Central Station. Numerous Twitter users also showed water beginning to flood their homes in numerous parts of the city and beyond. Newcastle City Council have confirmed that Central Station is closed. Train services from Edinburgh to London are likely to be affected in both directions, with cancellations inevitable. The main A1 motorway, which connects with the M1, has also been hit. uploaded an extraordinary video of a manhole cover being blown off by a torrent of water, exploding like a volcano into the air. Users also reported seeing roofs collapsing under the weight of water. The River Tyne has burst its banks in places. It has begun flooding into properties and was seen to be sweeping vehicles away.

Cars in the Chillingham Road area of the city were seen to be "floating" away as the rain encroached on houses in the city.
All Metro station's in the city are closed, with most underwater.
