7. The A75, Dumfries And Galloway
Believed to be Scotland's most haunted road, the A75 - and specifically the Kinmount Straight between Gretna and Annan - has associations with witchcraft, and is avoided by many at night. Peter Underwood's Gazetteer of Scottish Ghosts gives the most detailed account a terrifying trip on the road in the dead of night. Two brothers, Derek and Norman Ferguson were returning from a motoring tour of Scotland and had had the most eventful part of their trip within 15 miles of their home in Annan in 1962. Their car was besieged by an ethereal wind, while a strange energy tried to take control of the steering wheel from driver Derek. At the same time, bizarre entities danced in the road before them and wild shrieks rent the air. It all came to an end with the near collision with the phantom van that haunts the road. Sightings continued in the following decades, with drivers thinking they had run over pedestrians appearing out of nowhere in the middle of the road.
