A Song Of Ice And Fire: 9 Essential Questions For The Winds Of Winter

4. Is Aegon Targaryen A Fake?

Untitledaeg Fans were both outraged and bewildered when Rhaegar's son, Aegon, was revealed living and breathing. Personally, I don't mind the reveal, but it caused uproar because a new major player, especially this late into the game, could not be accepted. Throughout the first four books, GRRM constantly reminds us Aegon's skull was smashed against a wall by The Mountain. To reveal a switch so late is hard to accept especially when fans believe there is already a secret Targaryen or two. But a lot still believe Aegon, in fact, was killed during Robert's Rebellion, and that the Aegon of current events is a fake created by Varys and Illyrio Mopatis. During the House of the Undying, Daenerys is warned of a "mummers dragon" and if you recall, Varys was a mummer in his childhood. Is Aegon the fake dragon Dany is warned about? What if he is a Blackfyre instead? Illyrio has stated that the male line is extinct, but he never elaborated on the female line. It makes sense why the Golden Company decided to side with Aegon towards the end of ADwD. The Company was created after Aegor Rivers was defeated and fled after the Blackfyre Rebellion ended. Aegon's identity seems strange and we need answers.
