The Truth Behind 10 Common Superstitions
9. Walking Under Ladders
The logic behind the superstition that you shouldn't walk under a ladder is probably pretty obvious to most people - it's so that you don't get anything dropped on your head.
Whether or not this is how it started, the superstition became something of biblical proportions. In early Christianity, the triangle was a sacred symbol representing the Holy Trinity. When a ladder is leaning against a wall, it creates a triangle, and walking through it would cause it to break.
This could have serious consequences. Walking under a ladder could even have you branded as a witch, or at the very least, someone who was in league with Satan. Not a label that is going to serve you well in a deeply Christian society, unless of course you enjoy being dunked into rivers and hung for practising evil magic.
Plus, you know, someone might drop a hammer (or a wrestler) on you or something.
