10 Players Newcastle Should Never Have Sold In The Premier League Era

9. John Dahl Tomasson

Most would consider Tomasson an odd inclusion given that the solitary season the then spent with the club was a disaster after managing just three goals in 35 games after arriving from Dutch football where he was prolific for Heerenveen. Some mitigation must be applied, however. It was initially envisaged by Dalglish that Tomasson, 22 at the time, would play in the hole just off Shearer - as a no.10 - but was required to take up the central striking duties after our number nine was injured in pre-season. Tomasson subsequently failed to convince and was swiftly returned to Holland in 1998. But it was the Danish striker who went on to have the last laugh, becoming one of Europe's deadliest attacking midfielders and netting over 140 goals for Feyenoord, AC Milan, Stuttgart and Villarreal across the next 13 years. Perhaps Newcastle were a little hasty in their judgement of a player that would go on to win a Champions League and UEFA Cup winners medal.
