11 Players Newcastle Fans Wrongly Thought Were The Future

9. Adam Campbell

Like with Remie Streete, Adam Campbell could well pull his Newcastle career back, because he's still contracted to the club, but he's yet another unfortunate victim of the endless, but horribly inefficient St. James' Park youth conveyor belt. He's like a walking personification of the Newcastle production line: prodigiously talented, prolific in the Reserves, loaned out to a lesser team for experience, and then forgotten about by the first-team. Like many before him - and presumably many more to come - Campbell hit the brick wall that stops most Reserve talents coming through to the first team, and unfortunately a string of unsuccessful short-term loans to the likes of Carlisle, St Mirren and Fleetwood have seen perceptions of him change from the next Gazza to the next Paul Robinson. It also doesn't help him that Adam Armstrong has basically taken over him as the Next Big Geordie thing, and he's a couple of years younger. And sadly, there can only be room for one Next Big Geordie Thing.
