Newcastle United's Greatest Foreign XI

2. Striker: Jorge Robledo €“ Chile (And Yorkshire)

Digging into the vaults a little for this one, but with very good reason. €˜George€™ came to the Toon from Chile, via Barnsley: the son of a Chilean father and English mother, George and the family moved to Yorkshire (which definitely likes to think of itself as a foreign country), in the 1930s. He netted a shed-full of goals during his stay on Tyneside, including one in the FA Cup final in 1951-52 season, which makes him the only player on this list to win a major trophy (unless winning the Championship counts, which it doesn't, even though it should). Despite his Latin American heritage, and his goal-scoring prowess, George was a down-to-earth, working class lad: a Geordie in all but name (in fact, even in name), and his career shows just how far football has come - from leather and pig skin to the Ballon d€™Or. George worked as a coal miner, he wouldn€™t move to the Toon unless they signed his brother Ted as well, when he finished playing, he worked as a PE teacher in Chile (no monotone punditry for old George).
