Newcastle United's Greatest Foreign XI

9. Centre Back: Fabricio Coloccini (Argentina)

€œI want curly hair too€. The first player on this list that would get into the team purely on merit, Colo has arguably been the Toon's most consistent player in an area of the pitch that the club have always been notoriously wobbly. His last-ditch tackles, clearances off the line, calm and collected passing all make for a great player. But that€™s not enough for this list: this list is about more than talent; it€™s about signing up to represent the Geordie nation. More is needed. So, ignore the nightmare that was the relegation season (for which, let€™s be honest, Colo has to shoulder a portion of the blame alongside his flowing locks) and concentrate on the season in the Championship. It would have been easy €“ understandable €“ for Colo to jump ship to a mid-table Premier League side (see Damien Duff) and see out the rest of his career, but he didn€™t. He stuck in, and got NUFC back where they belong, and regained his composure and confidence in the proceed.
