Star Trek: 10 Secrets About The 25th Century Fleet You Need To Know

4. Honours to Trek

Flying among the ships of the 25th Century are several named in honour of Star Trek universe characters, some of which might not have been apparent in the events of the series.

Two names immediately stand out amongst the fleet and trace their heritage back to Those Old Scientists and specifically the USS Uhura and the USS Hikaru Sulu

The Uhura is part of the Reliant Class which can visually trace its lineage back to the first "non-Enterprise" starship design to be seen onscreen. That would be the Miranda Class or as fans might know it better, the USS Reliant from Star Trek II which became one of the Federation workhorses through the 23rd and 24th Centuries. The Hikaru Sulu was noted in the Frontier Day fleet graphics but it would only be confirmed as an Odyssey Class vessel by production designer Dave Blass. This in turn means that the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-F was not the only ship from that class to have been in attendance.

Further real world Trek alumni were also honoured including the already mentioned Mike Okuda and Rick Sternbach. USS Titan designer Sean Tourangeau also received his own namesake. Classic Star Trek ship names such as the Appalachia (part of the First Contact fleet), Venture (a Galaxy Class in The Way of the Warrior) and Sutherland (captained by Data in Redemption II) would also be among the ranks.

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
