10 4th Wall Breaking TV Show Moments Everyone Hated

2. "I Didn't Know Romulans Could Be So Hot" - Star Trek: Picard

The first season of Star Trek: Picard caused enormous division among the fanbase for many reasons, though one of its more un-controversial flourishes was the introduction of so-called "hot Romulans."

With only a few exceptions, the Romulans have typically been depicted as relatively plain-looking, or at least not conventionally attractive to our close-minded human values.

But Picard wasted no time at all in inundating fans with a bevy of extremely good-looking, if not downright sexy, Romulan characters, from Picard's (Patrick Stewart) housekeeeper Laris (Orla Brady) to spy Narek (Harry Treadaway), his sister Narissa (Peyton List), Elnor (Evan Evagora), and so on.

Just doing the thing wasn't enough for the show, however, as in the season's second episode "Maps and Legends," Soji's (Isa Briones) friend says to her of Narek, "I didn't know Romulans could be so hot."

This is one of those moments that really just needs to be "show, don't tell," because beyond being a cringe-worthy one-liner, the dialogue sounds jarringly contemporary for Star Trek.
