10 Anime Series You Only Watch Once
1. Watamote
Watamote can be seen in two lights, as a comedic cringefest or a terrifying cringefest, dependant on your own personal ability to relate to the main character.
The series follows a young girl failing at every attempt to overcome her anxiety by becoming popular. Don't let that synopsis fool you, Watamote is not messing around.
What makes this anime take the number one spot is that it feels real to an extent, sort of like Welcome To The NHK. But, while that show has an "it gets better" message, there is no hope found here.
You can imagine yourself in some of these situations, or may even have been in them or similar ones yourself. It's this level of realism and empathy that makes all of the protagonists failures feel like a gorilla-sized punch to the gut.
Watching her fail over and over is worse torture than anything in Corpse Party or When They Cry. Blood and guts are messed up and all, but there is nothing more messed up than reality.
Whether or not you think its funny or soul crushing, it doesn't change the fact that the overall feeling of hopelessness in Watamote makes it an experience you'll never want to put yourself through again.
That intro song is a total bop though.
