The isekai has become one of the most popular genres of anime recently, with Sword Art Online helping to popularise it.

Kirito is a boy who, along with countless others, has become trapped in a virtual reality video game world where they must beat the game to escape or die trying. At least that's for the first season, as there are multiple.

To get this out of the way first, not all of SAO is terrible. The actual part that takes place inside of the game Sword Art Online is great. That only covers the first fourteen episodes though, everything after is a mess of epic proportions.

The big question you'll find yourself asking about the series is why is there so much sexual violence. It serves no purpose, and the anime could do what it does without.

SAO is like Bleach in that it showed so much promise, yet failed to deliver. The difference between the two, though is Bleach isn't misogynistic. If anything, don't even bother finishing it one time. Just stop after those first fourteen episodes, make up your own ending, and then move on with your life.
