10 Anime Series You Only Watch Once
5. Welcome To The NHK
Welcome To The NHK is an incredible anime that tells a story about mental health with understanding rarely found in the medium. However, that's also what makes it a one time go kind of series.
Tatsuhrio is what's known as a Hikikomori, someone who lives in social isolation due to crippling anxiety. One day he meets a mysterious girl who offers him a way to adjust himself back into society. The series then tracks the trials and tribulations of their collective recovery, from its beautiful highs to the most painful of lows.
Some of the subject matter explored are; depression, suicide, self-harm, anxiety, paranoia, and co-dependency. It handles each theme with grace and, at the end of the day, has a truly hopeful outlook.
Though in order to get to the light at the end, the viewer is walked down a tunnel of absolute darkness. Not dark in a violent way, but in true to life one. The character's struggles feel real, making it all the more stressful to watch.
By the time you get to its "it gets better" message, Welcome To The NHK will leave you feeling emotionally exhausted. It's an important story that we need more of, just not one that that'll have you itching to go back.
