2. The End Of Time
Christopher Eccleston piloted the TARDIS for Doctor Who's triumphant return in the twenty-first century, but David Tennant consolidated matters with his performance as a dashing time shagger. His exit from the vortex was a double whammy, as showrunner Russell T Davies announced his departure also.
The End Of Time became one of the biggest Time Lord regeneration storylines in the series' history. Gallifrey returned and no less a figure than Timothy Dalton played Rassilon. John Simm rocked up as a now-peroxide-bonced Master, though not quite as we knew him. The stage was set for a massive showdown, underpinned by the tragic strand of Tennant being aware of his forthcoming demise.
This whopper aired over the Christmas/New Year period and, in keeping with that season of excess, fandom was seriously gorged out by the closing credits. The Tenth Doctor's protracted goodbye came across as harrowing and overindulgent. He shuffled off his mortal coil in an upsettingly undignified fashion. It would take a Whovian with the constitution of an Androgum to return to this territory.
