Russell T Davies was master of the soapy story arc. And there was none more soapier, more poignant and more moving than Doomsday. An essential part of Doctor Who in its current form is its embracing (quite literally) of love and romance. In the classic series the Doctor and his companions were close chums. From Eccleston onwards things got sexy, and that aspect erupted with the introduction of Tennant into the equation.

As he entered his tenth incarnation his relationship with Rose went up a few notches. Miss Tyler clearly became smitten with the Time Lord early on. It took two long years before he reciprocated. She was in her teens. He in his two thousands. Talk about age gap! Yet the telegenic leads made it work.

The finishing instalment of Series 2 saw the pair forcibly separated after the battle of Canary Wharf. Bad Wolf Bay was the scene for a sequence of immense blubbery, as the team said their final farewells. I've seen it twice, but the second time I'd had a bit to drink. That certainly helped dull the pain of the most soul-destroying climax in the show's Whostory.
