8. Lisa Goes Missing - Six Feet Under
In season 3 of the very underappreciated HBO series Six Feet Under, oldest son Nate has a one night stand with his ex-girlfriend Lisa. This one night comes back to haunt him when Lisa shows up pregnant one day. Nate then has an on again/off again relationship with Brenda, a massage therapist with major emotional issues. Lisa, already having had an abortion from an unplanned pregnancy with Nate, decides to keep the baby. Realising that this is a sign for him to settle down with a "normal" person, he weds Lisa. Nate and Lisa have a turbulent marriage (mostly due to Nate's infidelity with Brenda and Lisa's suspicions therein) that Nate is incredibly unhappy with and is seeking a way out. But suddenly, one day, Lisa doesn't come home. Nate assumes she's just angry with him and slept at a friend's or something. But hours turn to days, and days turns to weeks. Lisa's dead body eventually washes up on a beach. Wracked with guilt, Nate confides in bis brother-in-law, Hoyt, husband to Lisa's sister. In a moment of weakness, Hoyt reveals to Nate that it was he who killed Lisa, as she tried to end their years long affair. As his wife looks on, Hoyt shoots himself, unable to cope with his own guilt, shame, and grief. This powerful ending was a reminder that closure can be a painful but necessary evil.
