4. Lori Grimes- The Walking Dead

I realise that a zombie apocalypse is as good a reason as any for people to act in a completely irrational way- but Lori Grimes along with her compatriot in the illogical Andrea- was enough to make me think that the world should just give up and let the zombies win. Mercifully (for the audience) both of the characters met their maker in the third season, Maggie, Michonne and even Carol are far more competent women and there is a much better balance between the characters now. Rick actually has people he can rely on and trust to make decisions; could you imagine if he, Daryl and Hershel were busy and he had to leave Lori or Andrea in charge? As I wanted to limit myself to a single entry from a show, I had to make the difficult choice of which character I wanted in the list and I decided on Lori. Lori is the wife of the central character Rick Grimes and is hands down one of the most annoying characters in the entire show, rivalled only by Andrea. The only consistency that the character displays is the inconsistency of her emotions. She is constantly demanding that the group and Rick in particular do one thing and then when they do it, she freaks out. Lori is relentlessly telling Rick that he needs to protect the group because the world had ended now and the rules have changed- yet when Carl wants to learn how to defend himself- No, thats crazy because he is just a boy. When the group stumbles upon a bunch of cars that NOBODY is using, she states that she is uncomfortable because it is a graveyard, never mind the fact that the group is in desperate need of supplies. Her time on the show is full of these contradictions of logic, but I think the nail in her coffin for the fans was how she handled the Rick and Shane situation. This is what the fans have brought up the most when complaining about the character, and rightfully so. With both of Rick and Shane, Lori would ask them one thing and the get mad at them when they did it. For example, she asked Shane to stay away from Carl, yet when he tries to do that she attack him for telling Carl to stay away from him. The big one though, is of course the conclusion of the conflict. She has a discussion with Rick in which she states, that Shane is losing his mind and she asks Rick to kill him- which he does. What was Loris reaction to her husband doing not only the right thing but also what she asked him to? She flips out and berates him as a monster. This woman was maddening and I think you will struggle to find anybody that will miss her.
