10 Awful Characters From Otherwise Excellent TV Shows
5. Maria LaGuerta - Dexter
If a certain storyline involving Debras crush on her brother had continued, then it would be Dexters sister taking up this spot. Mercifully that appears to have subsided, so instead it is Maria LaGuerta who takes up her rightful place on the list. Maria, a character who was killed off in the first novel on which the series is based- was spared to live an infuriatingly long life in television land. If there was one character throughout the run of the show that we all wished Dexter would stick on his table, it was Maria LaGuerta. God where do I start here? I guess we should begin with her relationship with Angel, that poor guy. Even when their will they wont they story was done and they were married, she still could not help but control him and everything that he did. Angel would have done anything that she wanted if she just gave him the room to breathe, but she couldnt because she is a self-centred control freak. She may well have cared for him but only as it relates to her, his career was important as long as she controlled it, his happiness was important as long as he was happy because of her. Of course, as much as she may have tried to control Batista- that was nothing compared to how she handled her professional life.
Maria was determined to be a success in the police force, at the expense of whomever and whatever got in her away. She would throw others-namely Debra- under the bus to further her career. Thats fine, there are plenty of characters that have this trait, but what about James Doakes. Doakes was her closest friend and confidant in the early years of the show and was perhaps the one person that she accepted that she could not control. So with all that trust and friendship, why would she not even entertain the idea that he was right about Dexter? When he died she had reservations about him being the Bay Harbour Butcher, but she just let it go. So years later when she finally decided to do something about it, it was too little too late. Doakes died under her watch and Dexter committed mass murders, under her watch. If she spent less time trying to further her own career and more on the job she actually had, perhaps she could have saved some lives, including Doakes.
