10 Awful TV Shows With Incredible First Episodes

5. Dexter

Big Bang Theory Pilot
Showtime

If you’re thinking that outstaying your welcome is a common theme surrounding the subpar shows on this list, you’d be right. Dexter is yet another show that would be lauded as one of the greatest of all time if it had just ended a few seasons earlier.

And once again, this show has a fantastic and immediately captivating premise. A deranged serial killer who only kills other serial killers, and who also works for the police department. That’s the stuff that the best show descriptions are made of and the pilot explores this premise to full effect, making us root for the title character despite him being a heartless murderer.

But it’s the same old story. Dexter, for a while, was beloved by fans and critics alike for its dark sensibilities and complex characters. But the later seasons just can’t hold a candle to it, with the final episode standing as the most insulting way to say goodbye to your fans until Game of Thrones managed to do it even worse.

It seems as though Dexter was such an efficient killer that even his own show couldn’t escape his clutches.
