10 Best Angel Episodes

1. A Hole In The World

Angel David Boreanaz
Warner Bros

A Hole in the World was a flawless creative triumph, ending Fred’s life on an agonisingly tragic note. With Angel and as his team placed in a no-win scenario, the episode powerfully contrasted their utter determination to save Fred with the hopelessness of the situation. The fact that Fred and Wesley had only just started their relationship made her death even more distressing, as did the flashback that highlighted how much she'd grown since her first appearance.

The dialogue, plotting and acting were superb throughout, bringing the nightmarish chain of events to life with incredible truth and rawness. Alexis Denisof and Amy Acker are obvious candidates to single out for special praise, given the heartrending poignancy of the couple's final moments together, but J. August Richards also deserves acclaim for his compelling performance, as a desperate Gunn discovered to his horror that he'd inadvertently helped cause Fred's death.

Ending with Illyria inhabiting Fred's body and Wesley denied a chance to grieve properly, A Hole in the World was a brutal experience. But while it may have been hard to watch, its undeniable quality and sheer emotional power mean that it stands as Angel's greatest episode.
