Though it may have lagged in recent years, there is a reason that the Simpsons is the most iconic and popular cartoon to ever show on network television. Built around familiar tropes and set ups it is surprisingly nuanced bring a balance of humor, entertainment and honest emotion to viewers for 25 seasons. These days The Simpsons is plagued by a lack of creativity after being on the air longer than any other television show, and is overshadowed by its dumber rip-offs (yes I'm looking at you Family Guy). But look back and you'll find a show that despite its irreverence portrayed on honest look at the American family.

While obviously known for its humor, what makes the Simpsons special is knack for taking on complex issues like gun control, the EPA and other non-political themes, like marriage and finding happiness. Those particular episodes delve beyond the simple entertainment that most cartoons provide. Obviously Matt Groening and Co. poke fun and parody these issues, but at the same time they offer layered observations and commentary about the state of life in America, with an intelligence and reality that most animated shows just can't offer.

Yes, The Simpsons is about a dumb fat father with a rebellious son, a nerdy daughter and a nagging wife. But to dismissing it as such without a closer look is a mistake. It is surprisingly complex and intelligent television show that tackles mature themes in a thoughtful way. And after many rip-offs and mimics have come and gone, there's a reason The Simpsons is still on air 25 years later.
