10 Best Batman Beyond Episodes

3. Unmasked

Batman Beyond Spellbinder
Warner Bros.

Unmasked is a bit of a rarity amongst season finales, in that it’s entirely told through backstory. Nevertheless, it’s a fitting send off for the series that encapsulates one of the key dilemmas of being Batman.

Bruce Wayne’s secret identity has always been a closely held secret, but Terry had looser lips. While saving a child from a fire, Terry takes off the Batman mask to reveal his face in an effort to calm the kid down. It works, but only serves to put a target on the kid’s back.

The Kobra were the perfect sort of gang for Batman Beyond’s artstyle, and the mind reading technology is as inventive and creative as the show had always been. A higher profile set of villains might have been more appropriate for a finale, but the Kobra definitely do their billing justice.

The fact that it’s all told via flashback does make for an interesting ending, but it also drains the stakes. It’s not as high octane as a lot of other entries in the series, but it’s one of the best examples of how Batman Beyond managed to dissect the character's legacy.
