10 Best Episodes Of The Crown

6. Tywysog Cymru (S3E6)

Olivia Colman The Crown
Netflix

Another example of The Crown at its finest, bringing us both an interesting history lesson on previously under-explored topics and a fascinating character study as well. The focus here is on Charles undertaking studies in Wales against his own wishes, so he can learn the Welsh language and understand their culture. He is assigned Welsh nationalist Tedi Millward as his tutor, who is initially furious at being handed a task that goes against everything he believes in. After an extremely rocky start, a friendship builds between the two men, which is amplified by Charles attachment to Millward's family.

Josh O'Connor is incredible as Charles, the delivery of each awkward joke and sad grimace encapsulating the young man who just wanted to be loved. He is ably backed up by Mark Lewis Jones who expertly displays the transition from disgruntled Welsh nationalist to father figure, refusing to let the young man sink despite the significant differences.

The episode concludes with a damning speech from Charles in front of the Welsh crowd, before the final showdown between mummy and son. There is raw passion flowing from Charles, but the dispassionate response of his mother says so much more.

While he likes to know himself as the 'thunder from down under', Luke is actually just a big dork who loves all things sport, film, James Bond, Doctor Who and Karaoke. With all the suave and sophistication of any Aussie half way through a slab, Luke will critique every minute detail of films and shows from all eras- unless it's 1990's Simpsons episodes, because they're just perfect
