United with her husband Francis, Clair would be willing to let the country suffer if it meant she or her husband could end up in control of it. Robin Wright brings a quiet steadiness to the role that makes Claire appear unflappable as nothing can be used to shake her. She is shrewd and intelligent and is constantly brewing an alternative plan in case her current one doesn't work out.
Her schemes grow with each season, which means the lengths she is willing to go to for power increase also. Eventually, Claire exhibits traits that are more akin to sociopathic tendencies that allow her to kill with her bare hands without remorse or regret. Still, with everyone else coming for Claire looking to see her fail, you can't help but get some satisfaction out of seeing her somehow manage to win again and again.
