10 Best Final Seasons In TV History

9. How I Met Your Mother (Season 9)

Friends Ending
CBS

While not everyone may agree with its controversial ending, no-one can argue the final season of How I Met Your Mother doesn't clutch at the heartstrings several times over. The sitcom goes out with an emotional finale full of revelations, bringing character arcs full circle, and leaving us all with life lessons about living to the fullest.

After eight years of watching Ted, Marshall, Lily, Barney and Robin go through their 20s and 30s together in New York City, the final season takes place across one wedding weekend, with flash-forwards to show how the gang went their separate ways.

All things considered, it's a clever concept - as the story is told through Ted's eyes, it only makes sense that one weekend in his life is given so much coverage. It was where he finally meets The Mother (the question everyone had been wanting to know since day one), but it's also the last time in a long time he gets to share some special memories with his friends, with the future looking uncertain after this point.

We also get some great pay-offs to some long-running sub-plots - we find out what Barney's job is (an incredible moment you can read more about here), the slap bet comes to an end, and there's a poignant origin story to 'The Robin'.
