2020 has been a pretty horrific year on the whole.

Almost every strand of the entertainment industry saw some pretty hefty delays or cancellations over the course of the year, but that isn't to say it was all bad. The horror genre, for instance, continued to find inspiration around it and kept pumping out the scares for audiences around the world. The likes of The Invisible Man and The Platform were perhaps the biggest and most acclaimed movies produced during the year, however it was on the small screen of television that the genre really found its heaviest hitters.

Be it on all the regular channels or online streaming platforms such as Netflix, audiences found themselves sat in front of their screens more than usual, which meant shows had to do more to stand out from the crowd.

And for horror shows with a planned 2020 release, this couldn't be more true. The horror genre has arguably never been more saturated and more diverse than it is now, with everything from glossy teen supernatural dramas to overly-gory slashers all finding plenty of popularity in recent times.

So with so many options to choose from, here are the top ten best horror tv shows

10. JU-ON: Origins

Known as The Grudge outside of its homeland, JU-ON is one of the most famous horror franchises to have emerged from Japan in recent times, with a whopping seven films to its name since the first release back in 2000.

With such a legendary platform already provided, it was unsurprising to see Netflix dive in, acquire the rights and produce an exclusive series in 2020. JU-ON: Origins was released over the course of July, featured six episodes roughly 30 minutes long, and revolved around a paranormal investigator named Yuseo investigating a supposedly cursed house.

Even though the scares can be a little hit or miss at times, Origins really stands out from the crowd by being one of the most memorably gruesome releases in the year. Whilst almost every episode has a scene or moment that is sure to be unsettling to watch, one particular sequence in the fourth episode is sure to be the most stomach-churning thing any audience member is likely to have seen over the course of the year.

Japan has established a wonderful reputation for producing some of the most wild and unnerving pieces of horror over the years, and thankfully JU-ON: Origins is not only respectful to its roots on the big screen, but the type of horror made famous in its homeland.

For a powerfully unnerving and authentic experience, JU-ON: Origins is an absolute go-to.
