10 Best Netflix Originals From 2021
5. High On The Hog
If you're not hungry, you definitely will be after this docuseries, as you embark on a journey of discovering the many African-American dishes that influenced a nation's cuisine and culture.
High on the Hog: How African American Cuisine Transformed America -- which is the actual full title of the series -- was based on a book by Jessica B. Harris, a culinary historian with a rare insight into the topic.
The Netflix adaptation stars Harris herself, along with Stephen Satterfield and Gabrielle E.W. Carter, as they dive deep into the relationship of food with culture, identity, and community.
It is, at its heart, a display of a unique love affair with food that traces its journey from Africa to the New World where it became a staple and a cultural touchstone even outside of black communities. Even with only four episodes currently produced, it is an incredibly satisfying watch, but just make sure you don't do it on an empty stomach.
