4. The Chair
The wonderful Sandra Oh stars as the newly appointed chair of the English department at Pembroke University in this offbeat dramedy.
The Chair was co-created by Annie Julia Wyman and Amanda Peet in her first-ever role behind the camera. And as far as writing debuts go, Peet has knocked it out of the park.
The first season consists of only six half-hour episodes, which at first seems too short to properly introduce its universe and characters, but the writing is so tight that nothing ever feels rushed or contrived. There is no unnecessary filler, and the show is just a very concentrated and streamlined run of events, jokes, and fast-tracked character development.
It does occasionally look like it's about to fall apart at the seams, but it never really does, as it can simply rely on Oh's immense talent and magnetism to keep it all together in a pinch, and move swiftly along. If you need some binge-watching material to fill out a Sunday afternoon, this is the perfect thing for you.
