3. Midnight Mass

Midnight Mass
Netflix

This eerie ensemble drama centres around the residents of a small, remote island, who begin experiencing strange supernatural events.

Mike Flanagan is a familiar name to every horror fan, with titles like Absentia and Oculus establishing him in the genre. He burst onto the mainstream scene with Netflix's The Haunting anthology and, later on, with writing and directing Doctor Sleep, the adaptation of Stephen King's sequel to The Shining.

In 2021, Flanagan came out with Midnight Mass, his passion project that he first conceived many years ago. It is a supernatural horror that follows a young man who, after being released from prison, returns to his hometown on an isolated island, at the same time as a mysterious priest.

The show draws heavily from biblical influences and themes, and it is as much a rumination on grief, as it is an unsettling thriller. Sure, bible-inspired horrors have been a thing seemingly forever, but Midnight Mass adds its own flair to it and really manages to hit that sweet spot.
