10 Best New TV Shows Nobody Is Watching
4. Dead Ringers
In fairness, this particular proposition never really had “hit” written across it. A remake of David Cronenberg’s icy, deadly strange 1988 psychological horror doesn’t naturally get tongues wagging in the same way an adaptation of a beloved video game does, for example.
Amazon Prime’s Dead Ringers miniseries deserves a great deal more attention than it got, though. First of all, the casting could hardly be more perfect, with Rachel Weisz standing in for Jeremy Irons in the dual roles of Beverly and Elliot Mantle. She’s let off the chain from her regular fare of period dramas, particularly in her thrilling turn as the morally murky Elliot.
Developed by stage veteran and Succession writer Alice Birch, Dead Ringers captures the subversive fun of Cronenberg’s body horror heyday while finding its own sharp and often satirical angle. Weisz’s sisters allow for one of the most frank discussions of reproduction and birthing rights in TV memory, but the weight of the topic never gets in the way of the show’s wit, shock factor, and outright fun.
