10 Best New TV Shows Nobody Is Watching
3. Drops Of God
Another undersung drama from Apple+’s neverending raft of releases, Drops of God is a particularly modern miniseries that takes a faintly mad concept, commits to it 100%, and comes out with something surprisingly elegant.
Based on a sprawling Manga, the latest version of Drops of God (this is its third televised iteration) condenses the property to great effect. A venerated French wine critic has died, leaving behind his impossibly valuable cellar. In his will lies the series’ devilish conceit: his life’s work will be left either to his estranged daughter, or his protégé.
What follows is perhaps the most exciting sequence of wine tastings ever committed to film. The late critic has devised a series of challenges to determine his true heir. With gloss and aplomb, we’re given an engaging battle of will and skills through the lens of two people who take booze very seriously indeed.
Drops of Gold’s best attribute is its pacing. The show has its ludicrous moments (all of which are silly but enjoyable), but it whips along at such speed while making grand use of its Tokyo setting, that it’s never less than delicious.
