10 Best One Time Only Characters In Batman: The Animated Series

6. Annie

Calendar Girl Batman
Warner Bros.

Even though the Tim Drake version of Robin did not truly gain importance until the feature length animated film, Batman Beyond: Return of The Joker, he did have quite a touching brush with romance in the episode, Growing Pains.

Here, Mathew Valencia's Robin discovers a young girl named Annie wandering the streets of Gotham alone. At first, she seems to have amnesia and is being pursued by her brutish father, who attacks both Robin and Batman.

As she runs from both the Caped Crusaders and from her father, Annie gradually unravels the truth for herself. Her father is, in fact, very familiar to Batman and her origin is far from innocent. What makes matters even worse is that Robin and Annie grow genuinely close, and Robin is truly devastated when he learns the truth. This gives the audience a much clearer reason to care about Dick Grayson's rough-around-the-edges successor.

Surprisingly, the angelic Annie was voiced by Francesca Marie Smith, who also portrayed the tomboyish bully, Helga Pataki in Hey Arnold!

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
