10 Best One Time Only Characters In Batman: The Animated Series

5. Sidney Debris

Calendar Girl Batman
Warner Bros.

The Man Who Killed Batman focuses on Sidney Debris, who is an incredible bungler, but an oft-times funny and sympathetic one.

Eager to break into Gotham's rackets, "Sid the Squid" sides with a gang of drug runners working for Rupert Thorne, who attempt to use Sidney as a distraction for Batman. They are amazed when Sid actually sends Batman plunging off of a rooftop into a gas tank, which then conveniently explodes; only Sid knows that Batman's "death" was just an unintended accident.

Whilst the criminal underworld rejoices in its newfound freedom, Harley Quinn brings Sid before The Joker, who is distraught that he did not kill the Dark Knight. The Clown Prince of Crime soon attempts to avenge himself upon Sidney, only for an unseen guardian angel to save Sid so that he may seek sanctuary with Thorne.

This is often regarded as one of the show's best episodes, even though it only features brief appearances from Batman. Indeed, it is the supporting cast who carry the episode and Matt Frewer characterizes Sid's clumsiness and naivety nicely.

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
