3. Blink Of An Eye

Blink of an Eye is sometimes forgotten when ranking the episodes of Voyager, yet it is a perfect piece of science fiction. The ship is stuck in a high orbit over an elliptical world, where its presence causes seismic damage below. Time moves differently for the people on the planet, rapidly cycling through different eras of history.

While Voyager observes, civilizations begin to rise beneath them. When the Doctor beams down, they discover that Voyager is now a central part of the planet's history.

It is an episode that deals with the impact that Starfleet and the Federation can unwittingly have on other worlds. Like some of the Original Series episodes, such as Patterns of Force and A Piece of the Action, entire cultures spring up while emulating periods of humanities history. Voyager's presence overhead inspires technological advancement, though this leads to military evolution as well.

Guest star Daniel Dae Kim is the only member of this alien world to step foot on Voyager, which allows the Starfleet crew to communicate with the planet and, eventually, to escape. A meditation on how the galaxy can always throw a curveball, this episode is one of Voyager's finest.
