Seeing your dear old dad brutally beaten to death is bound to leave you with a bit of a grudge.

Erlendur had a rough life following his father's death. Sometime after the failed attack on Ragnar, he married Torvi, the former wife of Jarl Borg. The two raised Jarl Borg's son despite Erlendur having no children of his own.

In order to hatch a devious plot against the Lothbrok family, Erlendur joined forces with an equally ambitious Earl Kalf. Kalf had wormed his way into Lagertha's good books and proposed that he and Erlendur should assist them on their raids in Paris.

Throughout this, Ragnar's eldest son Bjorn was having a love affair with Torvi. Since Bjorn had become one of the most fearsome Vikings - earning him the title Ironside for being almost unkillable - Erlendur elected not to go toe-to-toe with him.

Instead, he hired a berzerker to kill Bjorn while he was away from home. The attempt failed miserably, with Bjorn now realising who was out to kill him.

Ever the coward, Erlendur now tried to manipulate Torvi into killing Bjorn with a crossbow in front of everyone. Instead, she turned around and fired, leaving Erlendur to choke on his own blood.
