10 Best Villainous Voice Actors In The DC Animated Universe

2. Michael Ironside - Darkseid

Lex Luthor Justice League Unlimited

For years, Michael Ironside played the villain in a string of iconic horror and sci-fi movies. In Darkseid, however, he may have hit his peak, voicing a character who could go blow for blow with Superman but also possessed genius intellect, tactical mastery, and the vast armies of Apokolips. Darkseid's goal was simple - he wanted dominion over all life in the universe.

Ironside lent his distinctive growl to the alien god, but delivered it in measured, almost cultured tones, like a silk glove over an armoured fist. After all, what's more frightening than a completely rational-sounding madman? Ironside obviously enjoyed chewing up the scenery with Darkseid, giving him a brash, condescending arrogance, even in defeat.

Ironside has the pleasure of voicing one of the few DCAU villains who openly killed someone on screen and of pushing Superman to open up his usually throttled power during an all-out brawl in the JLU episode Destroyer. Ironside's cheerful gloating during these scenes helped make Darkseid one of the easiest DCAU villains to truly hate.

Bonus fun fact - Ironside also voiced an outstanding The Dark Knight Returns-era older Batman in the episode Legends of the Dark Knight, which includes one of the hardest-hitting fights in the DCAU.
