10 Big Time Actors Who Are Way Better On TV

2. James Gandolfini

Breaking Bad Bryan Cranston
Fox Searchlight Pictures

The much missed star was a big old bruiser; a bear of a man, strong, earthed, clever and sweet. It will be a while until we see his like again, but what a legacy he left.

On The Big Screen:

Before he made it big on TV, Gandolfini played a wretched, violent gangster in True Romance, who beat the snot out of Patricia Arquette; he was vile as Virgil, but totally believable. The Mexican was a good idea, badly executed, but Gandolfini saves it from total oblivion as Winston Baldry, the gay hitman who wants love. And in the over looked Enough Said, he's excellent as a kind and jokey divorcee.

In Your Living Room:

Absolutely nothing however can compare to Tony Soprano from The Sopranos. It's not as good as The Wire, but the latter would never have existed without the former, nor would most big shows around now. What's more, the former wouldn't have existed without James Gandolfini. This role, without any hint of over-exaggeration, is the single greatest in TV history thus far and Gandolfini ascends to god-like status from it alone.

Best TV Moment:

Tony is weakened, and has to show his power again, so he picks on Perry Annunziata, beats the crap out of him in front of the boys, goes to the toilet, vomits blood, then smiles at himself in the mirror.
