10 Biggest Missed Opportunities in Star Trek: Section 31

5. Hiring A Dialect Coach

Sven Ruygrok is a very nice person who tried his best.

As revealed by Cinemablend's Mick Joest on the TrekCulture podcast, quoting his interview with the actor, Ruygrok elected to use this accent. Fuzz was originally written to be American, though according to the actor, it just 'wasn't working.' He had recently appeared in a production of The Beauty Queen Of Lenane by Martin McDonagh, so felt that the accent he had used there would suffice.

It did not.

It is no secret that the writer of this article is Irish. Mastering the accent is a challenge but it is not forbidden. Star Trek has given us Miles O'Brien and Laris, both played by Irish actors. It has also given us Up The Long Ladder, Fair Haven, Spirit Folk and, perhaps worst of all, Finnegan from Shore Leave. It's been a mixed bag.

The caricature of Irishness that was Fuzz could have been avoided with the hiring of a dialect coach. This is not directed entirely at Ruygrok - it comes down to the team to assess whether or not something was working. There could have been a fun, villainous Irish character to add to Trek's roster.

Instead, we got a hopped-up Leprechaun with bangs.
