8. The Setlik III Massacre

This horrific attack on a Federation colony by the Cardassians was often spoken about though never shown. It was significant enough to turn a decorated Starfleet captain, Benjamin Maxwell, into a vigilante. He commanded the USS Rutledge at the time of the assault and was the first responder to the distress call from the colony.

Miles O’Brien, the most important man in the galaxy, served under Maxwell as the tactical officer and even gained the moniker 'Hero of Setlik III' for saving the lives of some of the last colonists alive on the day.

The attack was part of a terrible mistake. The Cardassians, for their part, believed the colony to be a staging ground for an invasion into their territory, inspiring them to conduct a preemptive strike. Though they found no military base, they continued with the assault anyway, killing close to one hundred Federation citizens. Captain Maxwell's family were among the dead, which would lead to his fall from grace in the years that followed.

Despite the ingenious methods that O'Brien used to save the lives of people on the planet, the memories of the day still haunted him years later, though not enough for him to follow Maxwell down the path of vigilante justice.
